Notes

Born on 11 November 1886 in Aldershot, the son of James and Louisa Withers, one of eight children. He joined the LSWR as a Lamp Lad in December 1899 and worked for the company until 1902. He rejoined in May 1912 and may have seen military service in the intervening years.
