In the obituary provided for Swales in the December 1915 issue of the London and North Western Railway Gazette, it stated that his death was a great loss for the company. In a letter written to his mother from his captain, it reads that he completed his duty in a splendid manner, which he was doing when he died from a bullet to the head. He was described as the best sergeant that they had.
