Aged 20, Hardcastle was employed at Bishop Auckland until he enlisted in September 1914. In April 1915, he was sent to the Dardenelles and included in some of the "very rough fighting" until invalided and sent home September of the same year. However Hardcastle was again sent back out in February 1916 to the evacuation of Gallipoli, and later transferring to the Western Front. He was reported as missing from November 1916.
