Aged 25 and unmarried. In his obituary in the October 1916 issue of The Great Central Railway Journal, it was stated that he was one of the Company's gallant and distinguished soldiers. He was drafted out to France in July 1915 after being a Spare Fireman at Sheffield Station. He fought at the battle of Loos, where he was decorated with a D. C. M (Distinguished Conduct Medal for extreme bravery.) He was stated to have been missing on the 13th August 1916 after failing to return from a mission.
