Notes

In the obituary given in the October 1915 issue of the London and North Western Railway Gazette, it was stated that Bebbington was looked upon as a hero. Rumour has it that Bebbington led his platoon for some hours after the death of his officers. He was then too wounded, and those wounds led to his death. Not only that but Bebbington fought under Lord Kitchener in the Sudan War, and with General Buller in the South African War. He was one of the few Lancashire Fusiliers that survived the battle of Spion Kop. It was also said that on one occasion his officer at the Dardenelles said that the men should follow Bebbington's order, if they could not hear his own.
