Aet 28, the son of the late John Smith and Isabella Smith of Garlieston, Sorbie, Wigtownshire. He was a booking clerk and enlisted early in 1915, but was wounded at Loos in September 1915 and was evacuated back to England. He was sent to the 3rd reserve battalion and returned to France in March 1916. He was wounded a second time in August 1916 and treated in hospital in Rouen. He rejoined the regiment a month later. He was wounded a third time on 4th Nov 1918 and died of is wounds the following day a the clearing station in Premont, Aisne. He is named on the Sorbie parish war memorial in Garlieston.
